Seasonal Lawn Care Calendar for Canberra Residents

G'day, it's Nikolai from The Lawn Firm. One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that timing is everything when it comes to lawn care, especially here in Canberra. Our seasons are sharp and distinct, and if you want your lawn to stay healthy and green year-round, knowing what to do and when to do it is key. Here's my seasonal lawn care guide, based on years of hands-on experience across the ACT.

Spring: Wake-Up and Grow

After a cold Canberra winter, spring is when your lawn starts to come back to life. This is the time to set strong foundations for the months ahead.

  • Aerate compacted soil to improve airflow and drainage

  • Apply fertiliser to encourage fresh growth

  • Overseed any bare patches left over from winter

  • Treat weeds early before they establish

This is one of the busiest times for us at The Lawn Firm - getting the basics right here makes a huge difference for the rest of the year.

Summer: Survive and Maintain

Canberra’s hot, dry summers can be brutal. Lawn care during this time is all about helping your lawn cope with heat stress.

  • Water deeply and early in the morning

  • Mow regularly, but don’t cut the grass too short

  • Keep an eye out for grubs and armyworms

  • Apply a soil wetting agent if needed to fight hydrophobic soil

Summer lawn care should be light but consistent. When clients trust The Lawn Firm to manage this for them, it takes the stress and guesswork out completely.

Autumn: Repair and Prepare

Autumn is the perfect time to fix any damage done during summer and prepare for the colder months.

  • Fertilise with a slow-release blend to strengthen the roots

  • Dethatch if needed to remove any build-up

  • Overseed to fill out thin areas

  • Top dress for smoother, healthier soil

A good autumn plan leads to a better lawn next spring. This is when we lock in long-term results for our clients.

Winter: Protect and Monitor

Even though your grass slows down in winter, there are still important steps to take.

  • Clear debris to allow sunlight through

  • Mow less often, but don’t let grass get too long

  • Watch for winter weeds like bindii and winter grass

  • Apply lime if needed to balance the soil pH

Winter is quieter, but a little care goes a long way. We keep our clients' lawns tidy and prepped for spring, without them lifting a finger.
